At KLS Aesthetics, we are thrilled to introduce skin tag removal as one of our newest services! This exciting addition is led by Debbie Friant, PA-C, who brings over 30 years of dermatology experience diagnosing and treating skin conditions. With her expertise, Debbie can help answer the question so many people wonder: “What is this little bump?”
What Are Skin Tags?
Skin tags, also known as acrochordons, are common, benign skin growths. They usually appear as small, flesh-colored or slightly darker bumps that hang from the skin by a thin stalk. Skin tags often form around the neck, underarms, eyelids, or groin—places where skin rubs against skin or clothing.
They can become irritating when they catch on jewelry, clothing, or razors, which is why many people choose to have them removed. Factors that can increase the likelihood of skin tags include:
- Aging
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Pregnancy
Skin Tag vs. Mole: What’s the Difference?
Although skin tags and moles are both common skin growths, they are not the same:
- Skin Tags: Made of skin tissue, soft, and usually hang from a stalk.
- Moles: Contain melanocytes (pigment-producing cells), can be flat or raised, and appear in a variety of colors.
Because moles can sometimes progress to melanoma (a form of skin cancer), they should always be properly evaluated and biopsied if removed. At KLS Aesthetics, we do not perform mole removal—we recommend seeing a dermatologist for any mole concerns.
Where Can Skin Tags Be Removed?
At KLS Aesthetics, skin tags can be removed from just about anywhere on the body. The only exception is certain eyelid tags that may require referral to an ophthalmologist for safety.
Who Performs the Treatment?
Your treatment will be performed by Debbie Friant, PA-C, a certified physician associate with an extensive background in dermatology and cosmetic skin procedures. You can trust that you are in expert hands.
Is Skin Tag Removal Covered by Insurance?
Because it is considered a cosmetic procedure, skin tag removal is not covered by insurance. At KLS Aesthetics, we do not bill insurance for this service.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your appointment will begin with a thorough skin examination to confirm you’re a good candidate for removal. If so:
- The area will be numbed with a small lidocaine injection.
- Depending on the size of the tag, it will be snipped off or cauterized.
- You’ll leave with a small bandage, which should be changed daily until the site heals.
Most clients find this treatment to be quick, simple, and effective.
Pre & Post Care
- You may return to normal activities the same day.
- Keep the area clean and covered until healed.
- Watch for any signs of irritation or infection (rare).
Can You Remove Skin Tags While Pregnant or Breastfeeding?
Yes, skin tag removal is considered safe during pregnancy or nursing. Lidocaine, used for numbing, is a pregnancy category B medication, meaning studies show no risk to the fetus. However, as with any procedure during pregnancy, it’s important to weigh the risk vs. benefit with your provider.
